The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have intensified their assault on El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in Sudan, deploying unmanned drones to strike civilian infrastructure including schools, hospitals, and power facilities.[1] A primary school was hit in one attack, killing three children.[1] The city, originally home to 500,000 residents, now shelters hundreds of thousands of internally displaced persons who have fled fighting elsewhere in the country.[1]
Humanitarian conditions in El Obeid have deteriorated sharply, with civilians facing acute shortages of medical supplies, food, and clean water.[1] The Sudanese Armed Forces have stationed approximately 13,000 troops in the city, while RSF forces are positioned roughly 30 kilometers away.[1] International organizations and United Nations officials have warned that the RSF may soon capture the city, potentially repeating the atrocities witnessed in El Fasher last year.[1] A UN Fact-Finding Mission reported in early 2026 that violence in El Fasher bore "hallmarks of genocide," according to findings presented to the Human Rights Council.[1] In June, the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Sudan stated that the conflict has already "impacted civilians and humanitarian aid to the city."[1] El Obeid emerged as an active conflict zone in 2023 and has served as a frontline since earlier this year.[1]
