Compromise is fundamental to the design process, representing nothing more than decision-making and the prioritization of competing interests.[1] At its core, compromise involves finding balance between two rival desires, with "tradeoff" serving as an alternative term that captures the relationship between advantages and disadvantages.[1]
Companies that claim their products involve "no compromise" or are "compromise-free" are making an impossible assertion, as every design decision inherently requires weighing different capabilities against one another.[1] Effective design, however, is not the absence of compromise but rather the deliberate exercise of judgment—selecting the right tradeoffs for a specific target audience.[1] Products designed to appeal to everyone typically excel at nothing, whereas good design makes principled choices about which audiences and priorities matter most.[1]
