July 28, 2024 marks the 50th anniversary of the Tangshan earthquake, and authorities have implemented security measures in anticipation of high-level official participation in memorial activities [1]. The city of Tangshan has issued a ban on unmanned aircraft and other low-altitude, slow-speed aviation vehicles from midnight on July 27 through midnight on July 29 [1]. The prohibited aircraft include drones, light sport aircraft, gliders, powered hang gliders, tethered and free balloons [1].
Following the Chinese Communist Party's established practice of attaching significance to major anniversaries in five- and ten-year increments, General Secretary Xi Jinping is expected to attend the commemoration ceremony, continuing a tradition observed by previous leaders [1]. Xi previously visited Tangshan on July 28, 2016, during the earthquake's 40th anniversary [1]. Former leader Hu Jintao visited the city in July 2006 for the 30th anniversary, paying respects with a wreath [1], while former leader Jiang Zemin made a special visit to Tangshan in 1996 for the 20th anniversary [1].
The original earthquake on July 28, 1976, registered magnitude 7.8 and resulted in 242,000 deaths and more than 164,000 people severely injured [1].
