President Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal formally established the Republican Patriotic Party on Saturday, marking an official break with former ally Ousmane Sonko, the leader of the governing PASTEF party.[1] The two leaders had jointly taken office under the PASTEF banner in 2024 but saw their alliance fracture over policy disagreements, particularly regarding International Monetary Fund loan negotiations.[1]
Faye dismissed Sonko as prime minister earlier this year, though PASTEF retained its parliamentary majority and control of the National Assembly.[1] Following his removal, Sonko was elected president of the National Assembly.[1] Faye subsequently appointed Amadou Al-Aminu Lo as the new prime minister in May, with a new cabinet formed in June that excluded PASTEF ministers.[1] The political realignment came as the previous Senegalese government's hidden debt of billions of dollars came to light.[1]
