UNESCO added five castles in Lebanon's Jebel Amil region, including Beaufort Castle, and the archaeological site of Sebastia in the occupied West Bank to its list of endangered world heritage sites during a conference held in Busan, South Korea on July 24, 2026.[1]
Israel's Foreign Ministry opposed the designation, with Foreign Minister Gideon Saar stating that the decision represented "an attempt to erase and deny the Jewish people's connection to this land."[1] The ministry characterized the move as "weaponizing cultural heritage."[1] Israel had taken control of approximately 200 hectares of Palestinian land surrounding Sebastia in 2025.[1]
Lebanon's Culture Minister Ghassan Salame described UNESCO's decision as "a significant achievement in efforts to protect these important Lebanese historical landmarks."[1] The Palestinian delegation had initially submitted Sebastia for UNESCO consideration in 2012.[1] Israel withdrew from UNESCO in 2019.[1]
