Japan's Meteorological Agency reported on July 25 that the nation had experienced its longest consecutive period of temperatures at or exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, spanning five days from July 21 to 25[1]. This streak surpassed all comparable historical records in the country's weather data[1].
Multiple regions across Japan recorded dangerous highs during this period[1]. Mino in Gifu Prefecture reached 40.8 degrees Celsius, while Tajimi in the same prefecture measured 40.7 degrees Celsius and Kuwana in Mie Prefecture recorded 40.6 degrees Celsius[1]. The extreme conditions placed severe strain on Tokyo's emergency services, with over 450 people requiring hospitalization for heat-related illness on July 22 alone—marking the highest single-day total since such statistics began being tracked[1]. During the week of July 13 to 19, a total of 10,857 people were rushed to medical facilities due to heat-related ailments[1].
Prior to this event, Japan had twice experienced consecutive four-day periods of temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius—occurring from August 10 to 13, 2013, and July 30 to August 2, 2025[1]. The current five-day streak represents the first time since 2010 that such a prolonged consecutive extreme heat event has been observed[1].
