Poland's Law and Justice Party (PiS), the country's primary opposition force, is experiencing its most severe internal crisis since its founding in 2001.[1] Party chairman Jaroslaw Kaczynski has accused former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and his allies of attempting to split the party, demanding that members sign loyalty oaths to remain affiliated.[1] Morawiecki rejected the requirement, declaring: "I will not sign any loyalty oath."[1] As a result, more than 30 party members have been expelled from the organization.[1]
The conflict escalated following a three-hour conversation between Kaczynski and Morawiecki that ended without resolution.[1] Party officials set a midnight deadline for members to declare their non-affiliation with the Development Association led by Morawiecki.[1] Morawiecki has secured backing from approximately 40 members of parliament and several European Union representatives.[1]
According to an Opinia24 poll conducted on July 22, 2026, Morawiecki's personal approval rating stands at 6.2 percent, while PiS maintains a 17.7 percent support level among voters.[1] The party's performance has declined significantly from the 2023 parliamentary election, when it garnered 35 percent of the vote.[1]
