World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has issued a public message to the people of Ituri Province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, announcing the return of Ebola virus disease with over 90 percent of cases concentrated in the region [1]. The current outbreak marks the 17th Ebola epidemic in the country [1]. Tedros emphasized that the virus responsible for this outbreak is Ebola Bundibugyo, for which no approved vaccines or treatments currently exist [1].
In his appeal, Tedros made a direct call to warring parties in the affected region, stating: "Please declare a ceasefire, even if only temporary. Even if only long enough to let health workers through" [1]. The director-general committed to personally traveling to Bunia to oversee the response, declaring that he will not "manage this outbreak from the comfort of a distant office" [1]. While the majority of cases have been reported in Ituri Province, a smaller number have also been documented in North Kivu and South Kivu [1]. Tedros drew on his previous experience, having visited North Kivu fourteen times between 2018 and 2020 during the earlier Ebola response [1].
