The World Health Organization has officially recognized El Salvador for eliminating trachoma as a public health concern. [1] Following targeted assessments conducted between 2023 and 2026, the country demonstrated an absence of active trachoma transmission, with no cases identified among children and no cases of advanced eye disease detected in adults. [1] This achievement reflects the combined impact of strengthened primary healthcare services, improved water and sanitation conditions, expanded eye health services, and coordinated multisectoral efforts. [1]
El Salvador becomes the first Central American nation and the second country in the Americas to reach this milestone. [1] Trachoma, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis and transmitted through contact with eye and nasal secretions, remains a leading infectious cause of blindness globally. [1] WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated that the validation "demonstrates the power of political commitment, strategic investment, and community engagement." [1] Globally, 64 countries have now been recognized by the WHO as having eliminated at least one neglected tropical disease, with the international target set to achieve trachoma elimination by 2030.
