Research estimates that 4.71 million deaths in 2021 were associated with bacterial antimicrobial resistance, with projections indicating that without intervention, this figure could reach 39 million deaths by 2050 [1]. The updated 2026-2036 Action Plan aims to reduce deaths related to bacterial antimicrobial resistance by 10 percent by 2030, in line with a target set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2024 [1].
Progress on antimicrobial resistance surveillance and policy development has been substantial, with more than 170 countries having established multisectoral national action plans to address the issue [1]. Additionally, 104 countries reported antimicrobial resistance data to WHO's monitoring system in 2025 [1]. The WHO's code of practice on ethical recruitment of health workers underwent its first major revision since its adoption in 2010, representing a 16-year interval [1].
