The World Health Organization has added the first molecular diagnostic test for Bundibugyo virus (BDBV) to its Emergency Use Listing, enabling rapid and accurate identification of the virus through detection of genetic material in blood samples.[1] This approval comes as the outbreak continues in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where authorities have confirmed 1,406 laboratory-verified cases and 438 deaths to date.[1]
The expansion of diagnostic capacity represents a significant advancement in outbreak response. Laboratory testing capabilities have scaled from an initial 200–400 tests per day to over 2,000 tests daily across a network of 10 laboratories.[1] According to Dr. Yukiko Nakatani, "timely access to quality-assured diagnostic tests can be critical in containing transmission amid rapidly evolving outbreak conditions."[1] The WHO is collaborating with manufacturers and global partners, including the Africa CDC, PATH, FIND, and CHAI, to establish a joint validation platform for assessing the performance of multiple diagnostic products and broadening the availability of testing tools.[1]
