The Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the World Health Organization have issued a joint statement confirming an outbreak of Ebola virus disease caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain in the country.[1] Cases and deaths have been reported across multiple health zones in Ituri Province, North Kivu Province, and South Kivu Province.[1]
The Bundibugyo virus variant currently lacks approved vaccines or specific treatment options.[1] In response to this gap, the government, WHO, and international partners are rapidly conducting randomized controlled trials of candidate vaccines and therapeutic approaches to contain transmission.[1] The joint mission to Bunia included participation from Democratic Republic of the Congo Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba, Communications Minister Patrick Muyaya Katembyi, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.[1]
