The World Health Organization has released updated global estimates on the burden of foodborne disease, revealing that unsafe food causes approximately 866 million illnesses and 1.5 million deaths every year.[1] Children under five face a risk level three times higher than older children and adults, and despite representing only 9 percent of the global population, they account for nearly one-third of all foodborne illness cases.[1]
The WHO analysis examined 42 major foodborne hazards across 194 countries between 2000 and 2021.[1] Chemical contamination emerged as a significant threat, accounting for 73 percent of foodborne deaths in 2021, with inorganic arsenic responsible for 42 percent of chemically-related deaths and lead accounting for 31 percent.[1] The economic impact is substantial, with foodborne disease generating approximately 31 billion dollars in productivity losses in 2021 before adjustment, rising to 647 billion dollars after adjustment.[1]
Geographically, Africa and Southeast Asia bear a disproportionate burden, accounting for nearly three-quarters of global foodborne illness cases and 60 percent of deaths.[1] WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus emphasized the urgency of the issue, stating: "Food safety is not an abstract issue—it touches every meal, every household, every day."[1] The organization has designated June 7, 2026, as World Food Safety Day, with the theme "From Burden to Solutions—Food Safety Everywhere."[1]
