The World Health Organization has urged governments worldwide to implement protective measures against youth addiction to tobacco and nicotine products ahead of World No Tobacco Day.[1] According to WHO, at least 4 million children aged 13 to 15 globally use tobacco products,[1] as tobacco and nicotine companies deliberately design these goods to be more addictive and specifically target adolescents.[1]
The organization emphasized that approximately 160 countries currently lack specific regulations governing nicotine pouches,[1] while tobacco use causes more than 7 million deaths annually worldwide.[1] To address this public health crisis, WHO recommends that governments adopt comprehensive strategies including banning flavored products, prohibiting advertising and promotion, establishing smoke-free and vapor-free zones, and strengthening enforcement of existing regulations.[1] Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, has been recognized as a model for local action, having intensified enforcement against e-cigarette sales and marketing.[1] The organization presented the 2026 World No Tobacco Day Award on May 19,[1] with World No Tobacco Day itself observed on May 31.[1]
