Researchers at St. George's, University of London have developed a novel approach to cancer treatment that applies evolutionary principles to prevent tumors from developing drug resistance.[1] The strategy centers on switching between chemotherapy regimens while tumors are still shrinking, rather than waiting for cancer to recur before changing treatment protocols.[1]
A mathematical model developed by the research team, led by Dr. Robert Noble, a senior lecturer in the mathematics department at St. George's, suggests that carefully timed rapid switches between multiple therapies can block cancer cells from evolving adaptive resistance.[1] The research, published in Genetics volume 232, issue 2 in July 2026, indicates that two-drug treatment combinations may succeed only against relatively small tumors, while three or more sequential therapy switches could potentially eliminate larger cancers.[1] Three clinical trials are currently underway testing the approach in soft tissue cancer, prostate cancer, and breast cancer patients.[1]
The interdisciplinary team behind the findings includes Srishti Patil, a student at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Armaan Ahmed, an undergraduate at Johns Hopkins University, and Dr. Yannick Viossat from Paris Cité University.[1]
