A natural food component called spermidine has demonstrated potential to strengthen immune protection following vaccination in older adults, according to research findings.[1] In a small-scale trial, researchers supplemented adults aged 65 and older with spermidine after receiving their third COVID-19 vaccine dose, with the most significant improvements observed in individuals who initially mounted poor immune responses, showing elevated antibody levels and enhanced neutralizing activity against multiple virus variants.[1]
The study, led by Dr. Katja Simon and Dr. Ghada Alsaleh and published in Aging Cell in 2026, involved 40 healthy adults aged 65 and over.[1] Participants received either 6 milligrams of spermidine or placebo daily for 13 weeks following their third COVID-19 vaccination.[1] Approximately one-quarter of participants showed very weak antibody responses despite receiving three vaccine doses.[1] Those receiving spermidine supplementation experienced substantial improvements across multiple immune markers, including higher SARS-CoV-2 antibody levels and stronger neutralizing activity against several viral variants.[1] The compound also reduced biomarkers associated with immune aging and increased autophagy, a cellular cleaning process.[1] No adverse effects related to the treatment were reported.[1]
Spermidine occurs naturally in foods including wheat germ, mushrooms, Parmesan cheese, and cheddar cheese.[1]
