Researchers have discovered that the largest volcanic event in Earth's history not only created an enormous underwater plateau but also dramatically restructured the oceanic crust beneath it. Using seismic wave analysis, scientists from Okayama Science University, Tokyo Institute of Science, and Hiroshima University found that the Ontong Java Plateau volcanic event, which occurred approximately 110–120 million years ago, generated a complex internal architecture within the oceanic crust consisting of horizontal layered structures and vertical magma channels, or dike swarms. The research, published in Geophysical Research Letters in 2025, Volume 52, Issue 19, reveals that unusually slow seismic wave velocities indicate the magma underwent chemical transformation processes that altered the composition of surrounding rocks. [1] The findings, led by researchers including Azusa Shito, Akira Ishikawa, and Masako Yoshikawa, provide new insights into how the largest known volcanic episode in planetary history fundamentally reshaped the geological substrate of an entire oceanic plate in the western Pacific region.
