According to Hong Kong media analysis of China's mid-year economic data, the world's second-largest economy is experiencing stark divergence between thriving emerging sectors and struggling traditional industries.[1] High-tech manufacturing and equipment manufacturing are driving growth, with high-tech manufacturing output increasing 13.3 percent year-on-year in the first half of the year and equipment manufacturing rising 9.3 percent.[1] The six emerging pillar industries reached nearly 6 trillion yuan in output value in 2025 and are projected to expand to over 10 trillion yuan by 2030.[1]
However, this strength stands in sharp contrast to persistent weakness elsewhere in the economy. Social retail sales increased only 1.3 percent, while fixed asset investment declined 5.7 percent year-on-year.[1] At the aggregate level, industrial output expanded 5.4 percent and service sector value added grew 5.2 percent.[1] Recognizing these imbalances, China's central bank has identified the economy as facing "strong supply paired with weak demand, structural divergence, and external shocks."[1] In response, the State Council emphasized the need to systematically advance the construction of the "six networks" initiative, while policymakers pursue coordinated fiscal and monetary measures to address the underlying tensions.[1]
