Chinese mathematicians Deng Yu and Wang Hong received the Fields Medal at the opening ceremony of the 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians held in Philadelphia, United States, marking the first time mathematicians of Chinese nationality have won this prestigious award.[1] Deng Yu, a professor of mathematics at the University of Chicago, was honored for solving one of Hilbert's famous 23 problems, while Wang Hong, affiliated with both France's Institute for Advanced Scientific Study and New York University in the United States, was recognized for resolving the three-dimensional Kakeya conjecture.[1]
The Fields Medal, widely regarded as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, is awarded once every four years to no more than four recipients, honoring scholars under the age of 40 at the time of the award.[1] Both laureates are alumni of Peking University's School of Mathematical Sciences.[1] Zhang Jiping, a professor at Peking University's School of Mathematical Sciences, commented that this achievement represents "a historic breakthrough for Chinese mathematicians in winning the Fields Medal, the highest international honor in mathematics, and holds milestone significance in the history of Chinese mathematics."[1]
