The Caiyuanba Yangtze River Railway Tunnel on the Yu-Xia High-Speed Railway achieved breakthrough on July 24, marking a major construction milestone for the project [1]. The tunnel, measuring 11,942 meters in length, is China's first high-speed rail tunnel to successfully traverse and break through the Yangtze River [1]. As a key control-point project for the entire Yu-Xia High-Speed Railway line, this tunnel represents a significant engineering achievement in connecting the route from Chongqing through Zhangjiajie, Changde, Changsha, Ganzhou, Ruijin, Longyan, Zhangzhou, and ending in Xiamen [1].
The construction of the tunnel required overcoming multiple complex challenges through an integrated approach combining open-cut excavation, mining methods, and shield tunneling techniques [1]. The shield tunnel segment spans 3,845 meters, including a submerged crossing section of 1,282 meters beneath the main navigation channel [1]. The specialized shield boring machine used for this work measures 12.66 meters in excavation diameter, stretches 142 meters in total length, weighs 3,500 tons, and operates with a cutting tool array of 239 implements [1]. The project had to navigate the urban environment while managing operations at the historic Caiyuanba Railway Station, which opened in 1952 and ceased passenger service from 2022 [1].
