Standing at 2,918 metres above sea level, Mount Olympus carries significant cultural and environmental value alongside its rich mythological heritage. Of Greece's 21 world heritage sites, only two are recognized as mixed cultural and natural designations, making Mount Olympus a potentially important addition to this category. Local officials have emphasized the urgency of the designation. Mayor Evangelos Geroliolios stated that "there's no time to waste. Further protective measures have to be taken."
