The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has initiated the replacement of critical magnets in the Large Hadron Collider as part of its High-Luminosity upgrade project 1. A total of 28 superconducting magnets will be removed and replaced with new units capable of generating magnetic fields approximately 40% stronger than the existing system 1. The new magnets will produce magnetic field strengths of 11.3 Tesla, enabling tighter compression of particle beams before collision and significantly increasing collision data for the ATLAS and CMS experiments 1.
This overhaul commenced during the third long-term shutdown (LS3), which began on September 7 1. The first new triplet quadrupole magnet is expected to arrive at the tunnel in early 2029 1. Installation of the new equipment will prioritize locations at the ATLAS and CMS detector sites 1. The existing magnets, which have been in operation for nearly two decades since their installation between 2005 and 2007, will be systematically removed to make way for the enhanced system 1.
