China's national carbon market will substantially broaden its industrial scope during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, extending beyond its current four sectors to include additional industries.1 Presently, the market covers power generation, steel, cement, and aluminum smelting; this will expand to encompass chemical and petrochemical sectors among others.1 By 2030, the covered carbon dioxide emissions are expected to represent over 75% of the nation's total carbon emissions.1
The China Electricity Council released the latest achievements of its power product carbon footprint management system, revealing that the average carbon footprint factor for national power generation decreased by 6.9% in 2024 compared to 2023.1 To standardize measurement practices, seven national standards for quantifying power carbon footprints were released in July 2026 and will take effect on February 1, 2027.1
