Qazwan Tarbosh, an Australian resident originally from Yemen, has not seen his parents in 16 years and now worries the renewed fighting in his homeland may prevent him from ever reuniting with them.1 His parents live in Taiz, one of the areas heavily affected by the intensified conflict.1
Yemen has experienced a dramatic escalation in violence since early September, with Houthi forces launching major military offensives across the country.1 On September 10, Houthi forces seized the strategic port city of Mocha.1 The humanitarian toll has been severe, with more than 130,000 people displaced since the beginning of September.1 The United Nations Refugee Agency has warned that the number of internally displaced people could climb above 230,000.1 Additionally, around 3,000 people have already fled across the Red Sea, with projections suggesting as many as 10,000 could make the journey.1 Despite the scale of the crisis, Yemen's humanitarian response has received less than 20 percent of the funding required.1
The recent deterioration marks a significant shift from the previous relative calm.1 A UN-brokered truce in 2022 had largely reduced fighting in the country.1 Qazwan has called on the Australian government to increase humanitarian aid and use diplomatic efforts to promote peace in Yemen.
