The UNESCO World Heritage Committee voted to inscribe Sebastia, a Palestinian town in the West Bank, and five Lebanese castles on the World Heritage List and the List of World Heritage in Danger during a meeting held in Busan, South Korea, despite opposition from Israel. [1]
Sebastia is located approximately 10 kilometers northwest of Nablus in the West Bank. [1] The Palestinian nomination for the site was first submitted in 2012. [1] The five Lebanese castles added to the heritage list are situated in southern Lebanon. [1]
Israel strongly objected to both inscriptions, accusing the Palestinian delegation of launching "hostile, unilateral propaganda activities" and characterizing the move as "the weaponization of cultural heritage." [1] Israeli officials alleged that the Palestinian nomination erased Sebastia's Jewish and Christian historical significance. [1] Regarding one of the Lebanese fortifications, Israel claimed that Hezbollah has constructed tunnels beneath the structure and launched rockets from the surrounding area. [1]
The vote proceeded despite these objections. [1] Israel withdrew from UNESCO in 2019. [1]
