The underlying cause is a dramatic warming trend across North Africa, which has heated at a rate of 0.43 degrees Celsius per decade between 1991 and 2025—the fastest warming among six regional subdivisions [1]. The World Meteorological Organization reported that in 2024, multiple countries across the region experienced temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius [1]. Dr. Mohammed Benumi noted that "in many parts of the Sahara, summer temperatures now frequently exceed 50 degrees Celsius, increasing the risk of severe heat stress" [1].
The physiological toll on camels is significant. Professor Abdelmadjid Chehma explained that "our research shows sustained high temperatures of 41-45 degrees Celsius and above, occurring both day and night, directly attack their cells" [1]. Camels typically thrive in temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius, leaving them increasingly vulnerable to current conditions [1].
The crisis extends beyond mortality. In some Somali regions, water prices have surged by more than 2,000 percent due to drought [1], compounding the challenges faced by pastoral communities dependent on these animals for survival.
