Gaines co-authored "Pumping Iron" with George Butler, a book first published in 1974 that was adapted into a landmark documentary released in 1977. [1] The film chronicled the competition between Arnold Schwarzenegger and bodybuilder Lou Ferrigno for the Mr. Olympia title, and proved instrumental in introducing Schwarzenegger to a global audience.
